Poetry

                                                Mirage

Author's note: Sometimes I look on the National Geographic website to find nature pictures that will inspire poetry. It is a great place to get inspiration. I would recommend it to anyone with writer's block. This poem is just free verse, as most of my poetry is, because it is easiest for me to write.
Miles of desert

Waiting for this day

This one moment of cleansing

A moment of refreshing downpour

How much longer can it last,

With the clouds lingering over?

Is it just a mirage,

to something that's rarely sees rain?

                         Green

Author's note: I decided to write a poem about a color because I was searching different types of poetry and I found the color poem. A color poem can just be how the color makes you feel or think of, or you could write about what it does to your five senses. I thought this was a pretty cool idea so I decided to try it.

Green
Green feels like the grass squished between your bare toes
Green looks like the earth, minus all the pollutants and litter
Green sounds like your surrounded by nature, and never need to go back to civilization
Green is like the earthy taste of lettuce, or sweet kiwi
Green is the smell of the ground after it rains
Green is happy and one with nature

The Storm of The Century

A storm is brewing.
Dark clouds have swallowed up the sky.
The sun must have fled.
A loud boom is sounded.
Even the deaf can feel the thunder rolling.
The leaves on the trees are being whipped by the wind.
A flash of lightning strikes.
It is followed by a scream.
The air is neither warm or cold.
Wheat is being stirred in the air violently,
Like in a stirring pot.
Warning sirens can barely be heard now.
The electric power in the air is building, stronger than ever.
This will be the storm of the century.

  1. First off, I love your author's notes. They reflect your level of self-awareness which is a necessary trait to develop as an independent reader and writer. The suggestions are also just excellent advice.
Of the two poems, my personal preference leans to the first. The color poem is very good at what it is, and an enjoyable piece. However, I find the poem about the desert to be more intriguing. I like the common experience of seeing the same sight, and responding to it. You also have a special knack for open form, which again, for your age, is pretty rare.

  2. Okay, since I wrote the last response, you added a poem, and I need to respond to it. I think it is lovely. I know we are talking about poetry as an academic pursuit, but I don't think you should dismiss this open form as it is truly excellent poetry, and gives you something to really work on your own writing skills. (I am so excited that you will join the lit group!)

  3. Comment on "Mirage":
I really like how you found an inspiration that meant something to you for this poem. Your author's note really let me know why you were writing this poem. I liked how you a word (mirage) that you used as your title and in your poem. When I read your poem I learned a new word! Your free verse poems are really good!! I would keep writing them!! Great Job!
